Cal Chetley este un adolescent timid si nesociabil în vârsta de 15 ani, care locuieste în localitatea Sallisaw din Oklahoma împreuna cu mama lui, Sharon. Cal este înca afectat de moartea tatalui sau într-un tragic accident de masina petrecut cu 10 ani în urma si de plecarea de acasa a fratelui mai mare pe nume Mike, un fost campion de lupte la fel ca si tatal lor. Desi este lipsit de calitati atletice native si este mai degraba înclinat spre studiu decât spre sport, din dorinta de a-si reuni familia destramata, Cal Chetley se înscrie în echipa de lupte a liceului, sperând în secret sa fie antrenat de catre fratele lui, Mike. Încurajat în permanenta de misteriosul Harry Newman, poreclit Red, tânarul singuratic, introvertit si firav, dobândeste încredere în fortele proprii, îsi dezvolta o personalitate puternica prin practicarea acestui sport care le-a adus celebritatea tatalui si fratelui sau si contribuie la reconsolidarea relatiilor ruinate din familie.

Coming of age in small-town Oklahoma. High schooler Cal Chetley is a brainy beanpole who lives with his widowed mother. Ten years earlier his father, a state wrestling champion, died in a car crash. Cal's older brother Mike, also a former wrestling champion but now down and out at 28, is estranged from the family. Over the course of a fall and winter, Cal joins the high school wrestling team while searching out Mike to ask for help. Mike rejects the offer, but Cal is persistent. Will Mike accept the challenge or is he destined to let Cal down? Giving advice and encouragement are an enigmatic old man named Red and a quirky friend named Luli. Then, there's Cal's mom who must be reckoned with.
